Holiday reading

July 9th, 2008 Posted in Life

Well, it’s taken a whilst to finalise, but I have decided on the books which will join me on our holiday to Orlando.

I’m taking three books with me.

As has been my custom for some time with me, the first book on my summer holiday reading pile is the new(ish) John Grisham book Playing for Pizza. I’ve always enjoyed getting engrossed in John Grisham novels and I’m looking forward to this as always.

Second on my reading pile is a book I’ve been meaning to read for at least two years now. I’ve been endlessly hoping that the price would come down a lot, or that a paperback copy would be released. Neither seems to have happened, so I have taken the plunge. The book is called Good to Great and it’s by Jim Collins.

And finally, the last book I’ve decided to take with me was a random find whilst browsing through Waterstones book store on Tuesday evening. I love book stores. Especially when I have no agenda. I can just see what’s out there and am happy to be influenced to purchase whatever takes my fancy. The book which grabbed me this time is called Tribal Leadership and is by Dave Logan, John King, and Halee Fischer-Wright.

I’ll share any thoughts and insights when I get back.

What are you reading this summer?

    Hello again Simon,
May I start by saying what wonderful choices! Truely excellent! I’ve just knocked through a copy of ‘Good to Great’ myself and it was a real corker! Typical Collins, thats for sure!

Bit of a bookworm myself seeing as you asked, just finished The Complete Unabridged History of the Great War but found it somewhat.. lacking.. just didn’t go as deep as I wanted it to, know what I mean ;) ;) Honestly though, picked myself up a good copy of Jigsaw. I’m a sucker for a Barbera Cartland!
    Warmest Regards,
    Simon Slive

    Hi Sam

Interesting picks…personally on holiday I always take books I have read before, so I get time to digest them again properly and I am a sucker for using a marker or sticky tabs to highlight stuff. My bookshelf is full of books that have bits of paper, torn bookmarks and fruit bar wrappers sticking out of them lol!

This summer holiday I are mostly be re-reading…

Blue Like Jazz - Donald Miller
Fire In The Valley - Freiberger & Swaine (A book on the history of the personal PC)
The Dream of Rome - Boris Johnson

I don’t go in for too much fiction to be honest….I likes me Geeky/Roman history ;)

    All the best mate

    Shaun

I’m not reading much these days. I do have the new David Sedaris book, When Engulfed By Flames. It’s just short essays, but always brings me to tears laughing…definitely what I need right now!

I wanted to pass along this link to you:

I don’t know if you follow his blog, but I think you should. :)

I took Frederick Buechner’s ‘Secrets in the Dark’ as an alternative kind of book to what I’d normally be reading. I also read ‘The Shack’. We went to Italy for the holiday so I am now really enjoying getting into ‘Playing for Pizza’.
